Spelling Software - Add/Import List

Version 1.4

The user has many options to create or modify a word list that can later be used in a test. These consist of:

  1. Adding a word list manually
  2. Loading a list via the internal software database
  3. Loading a list from a file by opening the Active List Manager
  4. Drag and drop a document and make a list from it (This is shown in more detail later)

When starting a new list, using the first option, the first thing that the user needs to do is click the “Create New List” button. This will display another form where the user can give the list a name. When the information is entered the user will click the done button. The list name, lesson, and title can be modified when the list is loaded for editing. Make any desired changes and click Save List. The user is then ready to add words to the new list. The user then enters a word next to the “Add Word” button by either clicking the “Add Word” button or just pressing enter. When the user is finished adding words to the list, click the “Save List” button. If the user wants to remove words from the list just check the words to be removed and click the “Remove Checked” button.

The second option is to load a list from the software database. This is where the lists are stored when the “Save List” button is clicked. To load a list from the internal database, select a list from the drop down box in the save/load list controls section. When the desired list is highlighted, click the “Load List” button. Then make any desired changes and resave the list. If no changes need to be made the list does not need to be loaded to take a test. The test center lets the user select any list that is inside the spelling software internal database.

When a list is loaded the user has the options: “Get Audio From www.M-W.com” and “Click Here for definition”. When the get audio button is clicked the program uses the internet to find audio files from www.M-W.com. The audio column next to the word will change from No to Yes. There is a progress bar above the button that shows the status of the task. If the word is not found, a user can record the word themselves using windows audio recorder. The file should be saved as the word.wav. The user can click the Open Audio Folder button and move the self created wav files into that folder. If the “Click Here” is clicked in the definition column next to the word, www.M-W.com is brought up to show the definition of that word.

The next method of entering a list into the internal database is from a file. The user can click the "Active List Manager" button. Then by clicking the Open List Folder, a folder will open that stores all spelling list files. Copy and paste all files in that folder and the next time the user enters the Active List Manager all the lists that were copied will appear under the Non-Active Lists Header. The lists can be moved back and forth from the internet database by selecting the list and clicking the center arrows. If a user has a list that is not on the Spelling Made Simple website, that user can select the list under the Non-Active Lists box and click the Upload Non-Active Lists to SMS Website button. The user will have a chance to add comments before the list is sent. The user can modify the order the lists appear in the software by selecting an Active list and clicking the up or down arrows to the left of the box.
